Creativity, Paper Crafting

This Santa Christmas card is cute and fun to make. In this tutorial, we will show you one of the easiest handmade Christmas card.

Supplies needed:

1. Carrier mat with low tack adhesive.

2. 60-degree blade.

3. 1 sheet of A4 card of 250 gsm or more. This is for the card base and we used white, but you could choose another colour if you want to.

4. 1 sheet of white A5 card of at least 160 gsm.

5. 1 sheet of red A5 card of at least 160 gsm.

6. 1 sheet of brown A5 card of at least 160 gsm.

7. 1 sheet of black A5 card of at least 160 gsm.

8. 1 sheet of pink or flesh coloured A5 card of at least 160 gsm.

9. Glue

10. Optional: crayons, pens or paints to add detail.

To get started, gather all the supplies needed and download the files here and unzip.

What to do.

1. We will start with the card base. Open the file base card.scpro2. We will cut this piece from the A4 card.

2. If we want to score the fold line then we select the blue colour button (1) to choose the blue fold line.

Then make sure that the Whole Area (2) is selected so that the fold line and the cut line will be in the correct position relative to each other.

3. Click on the scissors icon (1) to open the Cut Out Window. Make sure that Position after cutting is set to Go back to beginning (2) so that we return to the same origin point for the next cut, and then cut out (3). Remove the tick from  Use weeding frame (4) so that the box is not cut around the design, this will then remain unchecked by default unless you turn it back on.

4. Do not remove the media from the cutter or change its position between these two steps or the fold line will not be in the correct position.

Click on the green coloured button to select the green outline.

4. Do not remove the media from the cutter or change its position between these two steps or the fold line will not be in the correct position.

Click on the green coloured button to select the green outline.

5. Open the Cut Out Window by clicking the scissors icon (1) and Cut Out (2).

6. If you want to have a perforated fold line instead of a scored one make sure all the colours are selected.

7. Click on the scissors icon (1) to open the Cut Out Window. Click on the Advanced Settings Tab (2). Then click on the blue coloured button to select it (3).

8. In the Set Attributes Window set the Pounce down length and Pounce up length (1). Then click OK (2).

9. We can now see in the Cut Out Window that the fold line is pounced (1) whilst the cutline remains as a solid cut. Click on Cut Out (2).

10. Another way to set the pounce is to right-click on the blue coloured button (1) to open the Set Attributes Window for the blue fold line. Set the pounce down and pounce up values (2) and then click OK (3).

11. We can see that the fold line is now pounced and can cut the design.

12. Next, we need to cut all the parts to make the Santa, open the file santa elements.scpro2. We can see that there are multiple colours with multiple pieces.

13. Place the brown card in the cutter, click on the brown coloured button (1) to select the brown objects.

Choose the Optimised Option (2) because the cut does not need to line up with any other cut and with this option we save material by not cutting out of the centre of a piece of card.

14. Click on the scissors icon (1) to open the Cut Out Window and then Cut Out (2).

15. Replace the brown card with white, select the pale grey coloured button and cut out.

16. Replace the white card with red, select the red coloured button and cut out.

17. Replace the red card with pink or flesh coloured card, select the orange coloured button and cut out.

18. Replace the pink card with black, select the black coloured button and cut out.

Assembling the design

19. There are multiple pieces to this design. Some pieces are very similar, for example, the boots are very alike but there are slight differences so we need to take care that the correct piece is glued in the correct place.

For this reason, we have added a file with all the pieces numbered so that we are using the correct piece.

20. Take the base card and fold in half.

21. Take the larger piece of brown card (1), add glue to the back and stick onto the white base making sure that it lines up on all the edges.

22. Take the larger piece of red card (2), and glue on top of the base, making sure that the bottom and the sides line up and cover the base card.

23. Take the smaller piece of red card (3), this makes the hat, add glue only to the top half and place over the white card.

Note: Do not stick down the vertical piece on the left hand side.

24. Take the larger piece of pink card (4), and glue to the white base so that it lines up exactly with the red piece below. Check the fit is exactly as the top and bottom of this piece are slightly different shapes.

Note: There will be a small area of white card on the left side that is not covered.

25. Take the white piece that makes the fur of the hat (5).

26. Glue into place so that it fits between the red and the pink card and slides underneath the red on the left-hand side.

27. Glue down the rest of the piece of red card (3).

28. Take the white piece (6) that is the beard and moustache combined.

29. Glue into place so that it fits exactly over the point of the moustache on the right side of the base card and covers the white base card on the left side of the face.

Take the moustache piece (7) and glue on top of the beard lining up to the top and side of the beard.

30. Take the nose piece (9) and glue over the moustache.

31. Now for the eyelashes pieces (8). Place them on the face and then when you are happy with the position, add glue and stick them down.

32. Take the red piece (10), this is the arm. Glue into position so that the bottom of the arm fits exactly where the red body curves out and up.

33. Then the rest of the sack piece (11). Glue down the top part to sit exactly over the top of the larger piece of the sack but leave the bottom part loose.

34. Take the white piece (10), this is the thumb.

35. Add glue and stick underneath the sack. Then glue the rest of the sack over the thumb.

36. Take the white piece (13). This is the rest of the right-hand mitten.

37. Glue over the bottom part of the sack so that it appears that the sack is held in the hand.

38. Take the white piece (14), this is the left mitten. Glue into position as shown in the image. Take the bobble for the hat piece (15) and glue in place.

39. Add the fur trim piece (16), to the bottom of the coat.

40. Take the white pieces (17) and (18). These are the trim to the bottom of his trousers.

Note: These are slightly different shapes. Piece 17 is for the right leg and piece 18 for the left leg. The shape od the red piece 2 underneath has slight curves which will help get the correct positioning when we stick them in place.

41. Take the black pieces (19) and (20). These are the boots and will fit exactly over the bottom of the red part (2). Before glueing, make sure that you have the correct piece for each foot as they are slightly different shapes.

42. All the pieces to make our Santa Christmas Card are now assembled.

43. We can say our card is now complete. However, the use of paint, crayons or pens would allow us to add a little shading to give dimension to our design.

Using grey to add shadow to the fur and shape to the beard and moustache gives extra interest.

44. Using white or light grey adds shape to the boots.

45. Add some deep shades of red to his hat, trousers and coat. Use darker shades of brown to give shape to the sack where it rests on his shoulder and add shadow to where the sack is behind his body.

46. Now our card is truly finished!
